Flournoy was the presumptive nominee until progressive groups and the left wing of the Party fought back against her blatant super hawk militarism. And she was a favorite in the Democratic foreign policy establishment. So Biden backed down instead and nominated General Lloyd Austin, who, although himself a "high-ranking part of the war machine," has diverged from Flournoy and other war hawks on defense policy issues in the past. For example, when VP Biden wanted to withdraw troops from Iraq, Austin agreed while Flournoy and the Joint Chiefs of Staff did not.
Let's count it as yet another progressive victory over terrible picks for key Cabinet position. It's what happens when we fight back instead of surrendering to the status quo under the BS frame of claiming 'unity' to silence us. We have unity with we the people, the only unity that counts.
