Although he said he would up to $10,000. So why such a limited amount, when student debt averages over $35,000 and is compounded to the point that what is ultimately owed is far more than what was borrowed? Rising explores this with Briahna Joy Gray below.
Biden's main excuse is one of a deficit hawk hooked on the failed austerity ideology, the same one used for means testing Covid relief checks: The rich shouldn't get the same break as everyone else. The simple answer to both has been proposed: Get the money back from the rich through subsequent taxes. Since that excuse is moot why then?
Another excuse is that we have better uses for that money instead. Again, it's a false austerity argument because we can afford both loan forgiveness and other uses if we fairly tax corporations and cut their tax loopholes in the first place. It's a matter of priorities. So again, why does Biden fall for this failed Repugnacon austerity ideology?
The answer is of course that Biden and the establishment Dem Party are also owned by corporations, in this case the student loan lobby, and they want payback for their contributions. Repugs are open about it but Biden has to pretend he's for helping us so he makes such bad excuses for catering to them instead of us. We not only see through it but we continue to suffer saddled with not only huge student debt but the greedy compounded interest that keeps us in financial bondage throughout our adult lives, exactly as planned.
