From an interview in January 2021. He reiterates that the system is corrupt, that money buys legislation and we the people continue to get screwed. In a word: neoliberalism. And it's in both Parties. Bernie's history and campaigns were different, a direct challenge to that corruption. We see though how the Democratic establishment machine stopped that both times.
However Bernie's campaigns were successful in that it raised public awareness and we the people started to pressure the Dem Party to make changes. And they indeed at least started to move in the direction. Chomsky is encouraged that Biden's agenda is incorporating some of those moves. In order to keep it moving in that direction we the people must keep the pressure on, keep holding our elected officials to their promises and continuing to call them out when they do not. That is the process of democracy.
And when our officials start making excuses and telling we the people that we just don't understand how things work (or don't work), that itself is part of the corrupt process that tries to suppress us and we must call that out too. Unfortunately, because we want so much to believe in the promises then we unconsciously accept this propaganda, that it must be our lack of understanding. That's how the establishment continues to manufacture our consent.
Chomsky reiterates that our activism is what got us what progress we do have. And we must keep up that fierce and relentless fight. Yes, even our own Party will try to put us down to maintain the status quo, even calling what we do "bad faith" criticism as AOC and her apologists have recently done. No matter. We will continue the fight for democracy and not be deterred. We are determined and the fight is one well worth having, whatever the cost.
