Star Trek Discovery shows that these issues are still relevant. We haven't moved past them as some idealistic fans suppose, that in some future utopia the Federation is beyond all that. That supposed projected Federation is more likely one that just swept such issues under the rug and denies they still exist. It's sort of like how Repugnacons are trying to erase the history of racism and return to when white people ruled the world. Or when the US Supreme Corp decided to gut the Voting Rights Act proclaiming racism was over. Pretending identity issues are over and/or irrelevant doesn't "make it so number one."
