Why are we still giving churches tax exempt status?

Especially since they are now highly politically involved with some of them even backing fascism? If they are really motivated by helping people--a legitimate doubt for some of them--then let them do so with tax money. It's time to get rid of this antiquated notion that they are somehow special and above the dirty, mundane world of financial contribution to society. You can't on the one hand claim the degeneration of the mundane world for some spiritual purity while amassing and hoarding huge financial wealth.
