Greg Epstein was unanimously chosen by the chaplains of different faith traditions there because he's adept at finding common ground among them.
It is inspiring that not only the religious have chosen him to lead them but that a humanist is accepting of the religious as legitimate comrades in ethical and moral training. He is also a bridge between the religious and those on campus who don't identify as such but nonetheless want some sort of broader and more inclusive meaning in their lives.
This is truly the sort of attitude we humanists need to support if we want to attract younger people to carry our philosophy into the future. The strict atheism that rejects all religion as merely supernatural superstition is missing out on quite a lot of mutual understanding with the more liberal religious traditions which could foment a fruitful exchange and partnership.
Amen to that brother Epstein.
PS: It is no coincidence that Unitarian Universalist churches are partnered with not only secular but inter-faith alliances.
