Maher's solution: Quit hating

It's a simplistic and naive solution he promotes in this video. Just quit hating the opposition, find a way to get along, make love, not war. And yet in this clip he also realizes that the Repugnacons are experts at hate. That's the thing though: We don't hate them as people, we oppose that hate and must righteously fight it because that is the problem. And we certainly don't want to get along with the sort of fascism that the Repug Party has descended into but rather fight like hell against it.

So yes, part of the process is ridiculing those who hate and blindly follow authoritarian dictatorship, as it is an effective strategy to turn at least some of them around. Or at the very least reach those who are not that far gone who are shamed into being associated with the hatred. It's called tough love which is love nonetheless.

But the best way to help those who are brainwashed by the hate is to win elections and enact policies that gives them a better life. A good part of their hate comes from a system that uses and abuses them for the enrichment of the power elite. If we provide the means of directly impacting their lives for the better, and give them the opportunities they deserve, then the hate starts to fade. Slowly realization dawns that the ones who incited them to hate are the ones who created their circumstances in the first place.
