The base in western Ukraine is "a vital link in the pipeline to get weapons from NATO allies into Ukraine." This happened the day after Russia declared that western arms coming into Ukraine were "legitimate targets." NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said it is a "dangerous escalation" and threatened NATO's commitment of military retaliation if any of its members are attacked.
It seems Putin is, at least for now, afraid to directly attack a NATO country due to its commitment to strike back. It also seems with this attack near Poland though they are testing the waters. Fortunately NATO has responded strongly but it also seems they are afraid to let Ukraine into NATO because it just might push that madman over the edge.
It's too late for that: He's already mad and needs to be stopped. The US is still stopping short of a direct military response, instead vowing to send "another $200 million in arms and equipment for Ukraine, a package that reportedly includes Javelin anti-tank missiles and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles." We've been shipping those weapons into that attacked Ukrainian base from Poland. All further such shipments will be attacked as well. Next step?
