SAR: The crisis of truth in democratic societies

I watched this School for Advanced Research discussion yesterday. It highlights some of the discussions we had in the Fantastic 4 Quad Rants and well as wider integral/meta circles.

The both agreed that a huge problem is that truth has gone by the wayside in political engagement. Rosenfeld seemed to suggest it was a problem on both sides. But Solnit was far more specific that it was the Republican Party that is much more responsible for a complete and utter disregard for both truth and democracy.

Rosenfeld asserts that we must all dedicate our conversation to expressing the truth with those whom we disagree. In addition, such conversation must adhere to basic rules of civility to be effective. Whereas Solnit strongly disagreed in that the Republican Party has gone so far into authoritarianism that at this point there is no debate or civility possible with them. They must instead be exposed and defeated.
