Krugman: Autocracy and the Republican Party

From this post on the mid-term stakes. While the GOP is sympathetic to Orban's rule in Hungary, he thinks the US GOP would be much worse. Orban is a "soft fascism," where he just makes dissidents powerless by controlling the economy and the media. None are beaten up or thrown in jail.

However the violent rhetoric and actions of the GOP makes for a much worse fate. Trump has threatened to imprison and punish his opponents. The Jan. 6 insurrection, the Pelosi attack and the seditious conspiracy trials have shown just how much Trumpers are willing to use violence against anyone who disagrees. And the GOP, while on the surface condemning the violence, refuses to acknowledge the rhetoric that incites it and in which they participate.

Krugman thinks that if the GOP gains complete control we'll be wishing for the likes of Orban's soft fascism. That is a grim reality that we must consider when we cast our votes.
