Tempering ourselves to be in tune with humanity and our planet.
"Tuning a piano is a complex process that involves more than setting the pitch. Most piano keys have several strings associated with them to produce a single musical note. Only one string is perfectly tuned while the other strings are adjusted to slightly deviate from this pitch. This 'tempering' makes the tone have an oscillating 'beat.' Creating this tiny amount of deviation or 'offness' of the strings, rather than having them perfectly matched, gives every note and musical scale a more aesthetically pleasing sound. The variation can neither be too much nor too little; it must be just right, and this is part of what constitutes a great tuning and contributes to the soul of a piano’s sound.
"The same dynamic is at play with human beings. Though we tend to fantasize achieving a 'perfect pitch' in all aspects of our lives from health to mood and relationships, what we ought to be aiming for is a more complex tuning that embraces and utilizes differences and slight deviations. Doing so creates more rich and interesting dynamics and hence, more soulful and inspiring life music.
"Practically, this wisdom also invites us as people-helpers to go beyond treating or addressing individuals and instead to work like piano tuners that temper the strings of an entire instrument, which is the relational container holding the experience of everyone inside it. It's a liberating, exciting art to tune a couple, a whole family, and their entire context rather than try in vain to tune just one string. There are no perfect pitch people, there are just strings that resonate in relationship to other strings. Fortunately, people are even more dynamic than pianos and there are an almost infinite number of ways to tune our relations to create rich landscapes of unique, resonating tones."
