The movie is about the Business Plot of 1933. Dillenbeck, played by Robert De Niro, is the movie's characterization of General Smedley Butler. Butler testified before a Congressional Committee about the conspiracy of wealthy businessmen to install him as a dictator replacing FDR. No one was prosecuted by the Committee Report noted: "There is no question that these attempts were discussed, were planned,
and might have been placed in execution when and if the financial
backers deemed it expedient." Butler exposed them thus putting the plot on hold.
Dillenbeck's speech is below. It's a reminder that these same oligarchs are still intent on their fascist agenda. They came closer to their goal by backing Trumpler and his coup attempt but democracy held.* They are of course far from finished, continuing to buy the current US RepugliKlan Party to achieve their ends.
* There is a big difference between a paranoid conspiracy theory of the sort Trumpler and his co-conspirators cooked up and their actual conspiracy amply proven by the Jan. 6 Committee. The latter issued a criminal referral to the US Dept. of Justice, which had already been investigating the coup. It is democracy's hope that there will soon be indictments, prosecutions, verdicts and then imprisonment for these fascists.
Hopefully it will also expose the Big Money behind the government lackeys who tried to carry it out. That of course is made all the more difficult given the Dark Money laws allowing influential campaign contributions to be kept secret. Jane Mayer's book on the topic provides insight.
