I got my BA in English Literature. Studying literature as opposed to grammar takes account of the context to determine meaning rather than just a strict set of rules. So while the cartoon is funny it also shows how grammarians sometimes miss important meanings. Also, my degree gives me poetic license to play with and/or ignore the rules as needed for effect.
