Alito on willful blindness

Continuing this post on the topic, Supreme Court Justice Alito wrote the following in a previous case. It completely eliminates Trumpler's lame defense that he truly believed he won the election, given the repeated abundant evidence to the contrary by several of his own advisors.

"Many criminal statutes require proof that a defendant acted knowingly or willfully. Courts applying the doctrine of willful blindness hold that the defendant cannot escape the reach of these statutes by deliberately shielding themselves from clear evidence of critical facts that are strongly suggested by the circumstances. [...] Defendants who behave in this manner are just as culpable as those who have actual knowledge."
