And then in the article he said that one should NOT attempt to do that. Rather he makes the case that through evolution much of humanity is programmed for authoritarianism as a survival mechanism. So basically it's not their fault they are TrumPets when faced with the incessant propaganda based on fear and hate of the other.
Instead Thom advises us to find bridges with the TrumPets, areas of common ground where we can relate and be friendly. Avoid confrontational accusations and instead ask questions about their beliefs and values. If we can establish rapport then over time they might be more open to suggestions about their authoritarian predisposition. This all seems like good advise, since where we work or recreate there will always be TrumPets. It makes sense to go along to get along.
But one point still nags at me. Recall how in Nazi Germany such an attitude was mandatory, since if you expressed your true feelings your life was literally on the line. And while it's not that bad in the US at this time, that is exactly the sort of dictatorship that Trumpler and his followers want. Being nice with them at this point just to get along will in no way change their murderous behavior if and when they do attain such a dictatorship. And then we will live in that same sort of fear that our very lives depend upon.
So I challenge Thom on this one. While we do need to be nice to TrumPets at this point to avoid possible violent confrontation, we also need to strongly and fiercely challenge Trumpler and the fascism he and his followers spew at every opportunity. And we need to do so loudly, frequently and publicly. Which in turn will be heard by the TrumPets and they will hate us all the more. There really is no way to avoid it if we each are required to do our civic duty in fighting the rising fascism that has a very real possibility of becoming just like Nazi Germany. There is no feasible way to be nice about that.
