Howard Roark, the protagonist in The Fountainhead, was based on William Edward Hickman. He kidnapped a girl for ransom, but instead of returning the girl murdered and dismembered her. In Rand's writings she idolized Hickman for his "unfeeling, pitiless selfishness."
