Hartmann: Why would anybody embrace fascism?

Partly because we fear for our own safety. American demographics are becoming browner. While diversity should be a good thing, right-wing media instills paranoid fear that such diversity will replace white people altogether. Hence all the frantic claims about being invaded by brown people across the border, and the paranoia about canceling black history.

Enter the rapid rise of male white supremacy. It's always been with us but now more than ever it has become the rallying cry of the power brokers. The latter have always supported it but it was much easier to control the working masses when they were mostly white. They are expert at scapegoating people of color (POC) as the cause of white working class fear. But now with POC starting to outnumber whites it's reaching a fever pitch. So white male supremacy has gone from subtle dog whistle to blatant racism.

Hence the Repug demagogues are whipping up the fear against POC. And scared people, believing the lies, support the wanna be dictators who promise to eradicate the manufactured cause of that fear. It's the standard fascist playbook that has proved successful in the past and they're at it again. Fortunately this time too many remember the past and see it playing out yet again. We're up for this fight and we will once again prevail. But only if the privileged, progressive white folk get involved. Tag, you're it.
